Identification of Trees location and Description of works

You do not need to give a reason for the proposed work when submitting a six-week notice for tree work in a Conservation Area. However, providing a reason can be helpful, as it gives us more information when we assess the proposed work.

The location and the details of the tree should be listed using simple terms like back garden, front garden, communal area or forecourt, for example. 

Each tree should be given a unique number (using the tree codes provided or identified in another unique way for each tree) and its species should be identified. You do not need to use botanical Latin names for the trees, and if the tree species is unknown it should be marked ‘unknown species’.

It is vital that the tree works are clearly specified for each tree that residents wish to work on.

The following will not be accepted as part of an application: 

• 'See attached report' - submissions of this nature will be returned to the applicant with a request for a specific list of works. 
• 'Tidy up, lift, reshape, pollard, cut back, lop or trim' - descriptions must indicate the extent of the proposed works. 
• 'X % reduction' - percentage reduction should be provided with length, height and spread. Existing and proposed radial distance should also be provided. 

Some common tree work operations include: 

• Crown thinning - reducing the density of a tree's crown, without changing the overall shape or size of the tree. Thinning reduces the amount of foliage and lets more light through.

• Crown lifting - removing the lower branches to increase the clearance between the ground and the crown. 

• Crown reduction - reducing the crown by shortening branches, changing the overall size and shape of the tree.

All measurements for tree works should be in metres.
