How to use the search:
- in the top right-hand corner, select the 'Layer List' icon
- select the arrow next to 'Search-by-Map' (or press return, if navigating with a keyboard)
- select the layers you want to display on the map. If the option is greyed out, please zoom into the map further to activate the layer
- select the 'X' icon to close the layers list
- search for an address or postcode or zoom in and navigate around the map to the location you require
- once you have selected an area or restriction, select the arrow on the right-hand side of the box to view more information
Article 4 Direction
Article 4s (restricted areas) give a local authority power to remove certain permitted development rights. They are used in locations such as conservation areas or local high streets, giving local authorities more control in these areas.
Some alterations, extensions or changes of use do not need planning permission. This is called 'permitted development' and is granted under Article 3 of The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order.
Where permitted development rights are removed, planning permission is required.

Air safeguarding zones
Air safeguarding zones may restrict new developments in Cambridge and are in place as a result of Cambridge Airport's role as a contractor for the Ministry of Defence.
Marshall of Cambridge, the airport's owner has provided information on necessary height constraints and this is mapped by us as a constraint layer for use in relation to planning applications. This is based on Ordnance Survey data.

Contaminated land
Contaminated land is land that has become polluted as a result of a present or previous industrial activity. Contaminated material can affect the underlying ground or water within the ground and could harm people, building materials, water courses or nature.
Contaminated land is a material planning consideration. Before granting planning permission, we should, among other matters, be satisfied that:
- we understand the contamination condition of the site
- the proposed development will not pose an unacceptable risk
- we have sufficient information to be confident that it will be able to grant permission bearing in mind the need for the necessary remediation to be viable and practicable.
