Planning permission is not normally required for fitting insulation (where there is no change in external appearance). If the building is listed or is in a conservation area please use our pre-application service for further guidance.
Internal insulation
Installing insulation to internal walls in a single-family home does not require planning permission. You also do not need planning permission for:
- loft insulation
- cavity wall insulation
- floor insulation
External insulation
Planning permission is required for the following:
- from a mixture of render and brick or other cladding material to complete external wall insulation render
- from complete or mainly brick or other cladding material to complete or mainly external wall insulation render
You do not need planning permission for the following:
- from complete render to complete external wall insulation render
- from mainly render (for example where an elevation has brick arches, corbelling or bay window brick detailing) to complete external wall insulation render
- From a mixture of render and brick or other cladding material to a mixture of external wall insulation render over existing render and other matching cladding materials (such as brick slips). We recommended booking a meeting with our officers first in this instance.
Upgrading your windows
Double glazing
Installing double glazing is allowed. If you live in a flat or maisonette, please ensure the appearance of the new windows are the same as any existing windows.
Window repairs
Repairs and draught proofing to 'like for like' windows is permitted without applying for planning permission.
