We are developing plans for a new city district in North East Cambridge, the Proposed Submission North East Cambridge Area Action Plan was approved in January 2022.
North East Cambridge is now included within the Draft Cambridge Local Plan (2025) rather than taking forwards a separate Area Action Plan.
The North East Cambridge area covers 182 hectares of brownfield land. It is a 15-minute cycle ride from the city centre (though the radius circles on the map below do not show 15 minutes). The redevelopment of the site relies on the relocation of the Cambridge Waste Water Treatment Plant to create a huge opportunity to transform the area and create a major new city district.
The vision is for North East Cambridge to be a healthy, inclusive, walkable, low-carbon new city district with a vibrant mix of high quality homes, workplaces, services and social spaces, fully integrated with surrounding neighbourhoods.
The area crosses the boundary between Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire District Councils and the Councils are working closely together to ensure that residents and businesses around the area are informed and involved with how the area develops.
Preparation of the Area Action Plan

North East Cambridge is now included within the Draft Greater Cambridge Local Plan (2025), rather than taking forwards a separate Area Action Plan.
Three rounds of public consultation on the Area Action Plan have taken place:
- Issues & Options 1 (8 December 2014 to 2 February 2015)
- Issues & Options 2 (11 February to 25 March 2019)
- Draft North East Cambridge Area Action Plan from 27 July to 5 October 2020.

The Councils agreed the Proposed Submission North East Cambridge Area Action Plan in January 2022; however this version of the AAP has not been subject to public consultation.
